چکیده

The two-dimensional problem of advection–dispersion associated with a non-aqueousphase liquid (NAPL) pool is addressed using the boundary element method. The problem is appropriately posed with an inhomogeneous boundary condition taking into consideration the presence of the pool and the impermeable layer. We derive a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind for the concentration gradient along the pool location and compute the average mass transfer coefficient numerically using the boundary-element method. Numerical results are in agreement with asymptotic analytical solutions obtained for the cases of small and large Péclet number (Pex). The asymptotic solution for small Pex, which is obtained by applying a novel perturbation technique to the integral equation, is used to de-singularize the integral equation. Results predicted by this analysis are in good agreement with experimentally determined overall mass transfer coefficients.

A 3-D Hydrodynamic Dispersion Model for Modeling Tracer Transport in Geothermal Reservoirs

A 3-D hydrodynamic dispersion model for tracer transport is developed and implemented into the TOUGH2 EOS3 (T2R3D) module. The model formulation incorporates a full dispersion tensor, based on a 7-D velocity field with a 3-D, irregular grid in a heterogeneous geological system. Two different weighting schemes are proposed for spatial average of 7 D velocity fields and concentration gradients to...

Experimental Investigation of Phase Inversion of Liquid-Liquid Systems in a Spray Extraction Column

An experimental study of the phase inversion behavior of liquid-liquid dispersion has been conducted in a spray extraction column for systems of toluene / water, n-hexane/water, CCl4/water, toluene /water + glycerol (25 % wt), toluene + CCl4 (25 % wt) / water and toluene / acetic acid (5 % wt)/water. The effects of physical properties, mass transfer and column geometry...

Crank-nicolson Finite Element for 2-d Groundwater Flow, Advection-dispersion and Interphase Mass Transfer: I. Model Development

Abstract. Dense, non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are common organic contaminants in subsurface environment. Once spilled or leaked underground, they slowly dissolved into groundwater and generated a plume of contaminants. In order to manage the contaminated site and predict the behavior of dissolved DNAPL in heterogeneous subsurface requires a comprehensive numerical model. In this work, the...

Two-dimensional advection-dispersion equation with depth- dependent variable source concentration

The present work solves two-dimensional Advection-Dispersion Equation (ADE) in a semi-infinite domain. A variable source concentration is regarded as the monotonic decreasing function at the source boundary (x=0). Depth-dependent variables are considered to incorporate real life situations in this modeling study, with zero flux condition assumed to occur at the exit boundary of the domain, i.e....

A Simple Theoretical Model for Prediction of Phase Inversion

Phase inversion in liquid-liquid dispersions corresponds to the transitional boundary between Oil-in-Aqueous dispersion and Aqueous-in-Oil dispersion. A theoretical model based on simple assumptions was proposed to predict phase inversion point, ambivalence region and the hysteresis effect of inversion. Experimental data from the literature were used to validate the model and results were c...
